From August 2 to 4, the 2024 2nd International Conference on Design Science (ICDS 2024) was held. The conference was organized by the School of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical Systems and Vibration, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It was co-organized by the SJTU-GEC Academy Center for Innovative Design for Interdisciplinary Studies, the Shanghai Society for Modern Design Theory and Methodology Research, and the Xie Youbai Design Science Research Foundation. Over 150 scholars, experts, and students from countries including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and South Korea attended the conference. The conference was chaired by Professor Zhinan Zhang, Professor Jianxi Luo, and Associate Professor Ang Liu from the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical Systems and Vibration.

Professor Lifeng Xi, Executive Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered the opening address, reviewing the 2023 International Conference on Design Science (ICDS 2023) and expressing his hope that this conference would serve as a bridge for academic exchange and a bond of friendship, promoting cooperation and communication among experts and scholars in the field of design science.

​​​​​Academician Youbai Xie of the Chinese Academy of Engineering delivered the opening keynote speech, addressing the questions of "What is design?" and "Is there science in design?" He proposed four fundamental laws of design science and emphasized the need to enhance design competitiveness and promote the development of new productive forces in the AI era.

Professors Colm Durkan from the University of Cambridge, EunSook Kwon from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Jianxi Luo from City University of Hong Kong, Ang Liu from the University of New South Wales, Yixiong Feng from Zhejiang University, Xueguan Song from Dalian University of Technology, Zhinan Zhang from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Baotong Li from Xi'an Jiaotong University, Pai Zheng from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Wei Hua Lu from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Jin Qi from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Shen Jing, General Manager of Shanghai Huguan Data Technology Co., Ltd., delivered excellent academic reports on the frontiers of design disciplines, including design science, product design, structural design, industrial design, and generative design.

Parallel forums on "Advanced Technologies and System Design in Engineering," "AI-Driven Innovations and Human Factors in Design," and "Youth Innovation Session" were held during the conference to share the latest research findings in the field of design science. The conference also selected "Best Papers" and "Best Orals" awards.

The conference aimed to build a platform for academic exchange and achievement display in design science and interdisciplinary fields, to share the latest progress in design science, to promote interdisciplinary sharing and cooperation, and to advance the development and application of design science. A special youth session was added to the conference to provide young students with an international stage to showcase their creativity and talents, promote science popularization and youth innovation education, and inspire young people's interest in science and design, as well as to cultivate their innovative thinking and international vision.
